Sarah Griffin Receives 2014 Warren Stewart Making a Meaningful Difference Award

Metis Staff

Metis staff gathered on December 10, 2014, to assemble care packages for homeless families.

Metis's annual Warren Stewart Making a Meaningful Difference Award was presented on December 10, 2014, to Sarah Griffin, Metis research assistant. The award was established in 2008 in memory of Warren Stewart, a Metis colleague, to acknowledge a staff member who has made a significant contribution to a social cause, demonstrably improving the quality of life for others.

Sarah donates generously of her time to Baby Buggy, a nonprofit organization that provides families in need, including homeless families, with essential items for children from birth to 14. Baby Buggy distributes these items through a network of more than 100 community-based organizations across the country, including domestic violence shelters, anti-poverty programs fatherhood programs, educational programs, and others.

Sarah frequently donates clothing and other items to charitable organizations, but she wanted to do more. When she became aware that she could also give her time to Baby Buggy, she says, “It was the most precious thing I could offer.”

Sarah volunteers several times a month at the Baby Buggy headquarters, helping sort, fold, and package clothing donations. She is also coordinating the Metis staff volunteer efforts, which in the past have included participating in New York Cares Day.

This December, Sarah and Annette Ureña organized an effort among Metis staff to raise nearly $1,000 to purchase personal hygiene items for homeless families. On December 10, they and the staff compiled 100 care packages of these items and a significant number of children's toys, books, and supplies for new moms, which were delivered to Homes for the Homeless and Room to Grow in time for the holidays.

In honor of her receiving this year's award, Metis will make a donation to a charity of Sarah's choosing and to Gilda's Club, as it does annually in memory of Warren Stewart.
