Metis Paints School Mural on New York Cares Day

Books, musical instruments, and math equations were the theme of a Brooklyn classroom mural, painted on Saturday, October 19 by a 12-person Metis team as part of New York Cares Day. Participating for the second year in New York’s annual celebration of volunteerism, Metis staff, friends, and family spent the day brightening up the walls of the sixth grade “module room” of MS 354, The School of Integrated Learning in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn.

“We are trying to live out our mission of making a difference in the community, and are also seeking to meet our own community-building goals at Metis,” says Kathleen Agaton, senior research associate, who coordinated the team. “We selected this project because we enjoyed painting a mural together last year and because we liked the idea of creating a welcoming environment for children. It’s also the type of project that’s very rewarding because we work together as a team and can complete it in one day.”

One of the mural walls featured the school’s motto, “Learning Today, Leading Tomorrow.” Metis’s artists followed the design of Sarah Mayne, who had drawn her images on four walls of the classroom but gave the volunteers a great deal of freedom to choose their colors and other elements of the design.
