Metis Begins Evaluation of Girl Scout Leadership Institute

This summer, the Girl Scout Council of Greater New York will provide 51 high school girls from all over the city with a 10-day summer leadership experience focused on business, entrepreneurship, and ways to make positive societal change, followed by a year-long program that will include workshops, virtual mentoring, and implementation of “take-action” projects. The Girl Scout Leadership Institute - NYC, in collaboration with the Athena Center for Leadership Studies at Barnard College, will serve a cross-section of New York City girls, providing them the skills and competencies that will enable them to become leaders.

“As the Girl Scout Council of Greater New York celebrated its 100th anniversary this year, the organization took a broad look at its past and future,” says Julia Alemany, senior associate, who is leading Metis’s evaluation of the Girl Scout Leadership Institute. “One of its decisions was to strengthen its focus on leadership development and create an innovative, comprehensive program that will result in a stronger pipeline for the next generation of female leaders.”

During the Girl Scout Leadership Institute’s Summer Intensive, girls will work in teams to develop a business plan for a socially responsible venture. During the school year, the young women will continue to meet regularly and participate in an integrated curriculum that emphasizes girls’ leadership in the workplace, community, and world. Participants will learn from women role models in each of these areas, as well as make site visits to varied workplaces such as media companies, banks, and universities. During the year, each student will benefit from interaction with mentors from the professional world, including Girl Scout alumnae.

Metis will assess the implementation and outcomes of this program—which begins July 5, 2013. Through participants’ pre and post self-assessments and focus groups, interviews with staff, and surveys of volunteers and instructors, Metis will examine the extent to which girls increase their knowledge and ability to demonstrate select Girl Scout leadership outcomes and competencies established by the Athena Center in areas such as advocacy, communication, collaboration, and critical-thinking. The evaluation will also look at improvements in girls’ business and entrepreneurship knowledge as well as attitudes and dispositions toward leadership. The Girl Scouts intend to use the evaluation to develop the next year’s institute, which is expected to grow to 150 participants.
