Metis to Evaluate Boys & Girls Clubs of America Summer Program

Boys & Girls Clubs of America, based in Atlanta, has selected Metis to conduct a two-year evaluation of its new summer program, known as Brain Gain, to be launched in the summer of 2013. Brain Gain aims to reduce summer learning loss in a way that is very engaging and empowering for young people. The program is modeled on research into the most effective types of youth-development and out-of-school-time programs.

Brain Gain is a series of 18 hands-on, project-based learning modules that provide real-world experiences and promote the voices of youth in grades K-12. Exercises involve academic subjects, the arts, social-emotional learning, and team-building. Projects range from cooking to understanding the weather, to building a sculpture garden. During the summer of 2013, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America will pilot the program in 250 of its 4,000 clubs across the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands and on U.S. military bases. Metis will begin its evaluation by studying the program’s implementation in more than 20 randomly selected clubs, where 1,500 young people are expected to participate. In the second year of the evaluation, Metis will conduct a rigorous impact study, looking at the academic outcomes of the program participants compared to rigorously matched groups consisting of children and youth who do not attend any summer programming and those who participate in other summer interventions.
