Metis Staff to Present at AERA Conference April 30, 2013

Metis Research Associate Marisol Cunnington, EdD, will present a paper with Andrea Kantrowitz, Studio in a School teaching artist, at the American Educational Research Association conference on April 30, 2013.

The presentation, “Cultivating Common Ground: Integrating Standards-Based Visual Arts, Math, and Literacy in High-Poverty Urban Classrooms” addresses the results of a study that Metis conducted for Studio in a School. It is part of a symposium on arts integration organized by Kantrowitz for the San Francisco conference.

The presentation is based on Metis’s longitudinal experimental study of the three-year, federally funded Framing Student Success project. For this Arts in Education Model Development and Dissemination project, Studio in a School created instructional units that integrated standards-based instruction in visual arts, English language arts, and math for students in third through fifth grades in three high-needs New York City schools. In the AERA presentation, Cunnington and Kantrowitz will discuss the key factors that contributed to successful implementation of the arts-integrated curriculum units. One significant factor was close and ongoing collaboration among the educators involved in the project.

Carried out from fall 2009 through spring 2012, Framing Student Success was intended to improve students’ visual arts skills, Studio Habits of Mind (pro-cognitive skills), and academic achievement. Comparing students in treatment versus control schools, Metis found that students participating in the project significantly outperformed their control-school peers on the New York State ELA and math exams and demonstrated improvements in Studio Habits of Mind, such as engagement and persistence. Qualitative findings suggest that the program also gave struggling students opportunities for academic success.
