Jing Zhu to Present Results of Drop-Out-Prevention Program at 2013 AEA Conference

Metis’s Jing Zhu, senior associate, will present on Evaluating Program Impacts of the Graduate, Prepare, Succeed—New York City Initiative Using Propensity Score Matching at the American Evaluation Association conference in Washington, D.C., on October 17, 2013 at 2:40pm. Zhu will present Metis’s findings on the impact of this drop-out-prevention program, known as GPS-NYC, which was developed by the United Way of New York City based on extensive research in the field. With an intensive focus on ninth graders with high absenteeism, this program aims to increase both attendance and credits earned to pave the way for successful completion of high school. Using propensity score matching methods, Metis matched and compared the GPS-NYC participants in traditional high schools and transfer schools (designed to re-engage students who have dropped out or fallen behind) with similar groups of non-participants. Among the key statistically significant findings for the 2011–12 school year were that GPS students in traditional high schools gained in both average daily attendance and credits earned. In transfer high schools, participants earned more credits than the matched comparison group.
